What are the devices that have been mounted on the traffic signals?

Contrary to popular belief, these devices are NOT cameras. They were purchased by the State along with special strobe lights that have been mounted on certain emergency vehicles. The devices detect the emergency response vehicles responding to calls and automatically change the traffic lights to green for them.

I think something suspicious may be going on in my neighborhood, but I don't want to give my name. What can I do?

Call the department's "Secret Witness Hotline" at (775) 727-4900. You do not have to leave your name. Simply give us a brief description of the problem and we will act on your tip. Your anonymity is assured. If it is a crime in progress or other Emergency Dial 9-1-1.

What do I do if I get a citation?

If you get a traffic citation, and are guilty of the offense, then you should contact the Court Clerk at the Court checked off on the citation and get the fine (bail) amount. Then simply come in and pay the fine or make arrangements with the court to mail in the fine (bail) amount. If you feel you are not guilty, then come to court on the date and time specified on your citation. The Deputy who issued you the citation will have the burden to prove your guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The important thing to remember is if you don't pay the citation before your court date, and then you don't show up for your court date, a warrant for your arrest will be issued, and your driver's license will be suspended. So you can either pay the citation off before the appearance date or you can appear in court.

Do I have to sign the citation?

Yes, be certain to sign the ticket as requested by the officer. Your signature simply shows that you have received the citation and is a promise to appear in court; it is not an admission of guilt. Failure to sign the citation is a violation and will result in your arrest; NRS: 484.793.

I was stopped for a minor traffic violation and was arrested by the officer, Why?

There are a couple of reasons why. The most likely was you have either a FTA (Failure To Appear) open warrant from another county, or you have a track record of contempt of court violations. The deputy placed you under arrest and brought you into detention for you to post your bail, to ensure your appearence in court.  Or you did not have Identification, or you had a Suspended License for D.U.I. Or you are a Non-Resident involved in accident where the deputy had reasonable cause for believing that the you will disregard a written promise to appear in court; NRS: 484.797.

What can a motorist expect during a traffic stop?

> Deputy may activate emergency lights, horn/siren to gain your attention

> Additional Deputies may arrive as back-up

> Deputies will state their name/department and advise you why you are being stopped

> Deputy will request your license, insurance ID card and registration

> Deputy may issue a traffic citation

> Motorists can expect to be treated fairly, courteously and in a professional manner

What can a Deputy expect during a traffic stop?

> Driver should safely operate a vehicle to right side of roadway and stop

> Driver/occupants should keep hands in plain view and stay in car unless told otherwise

> Driver should have license, registration and insurance card ready for the officer

> Driver should not make any sudden movements. Advise Deputy if you need to enter your glove compartment to retrieve your license, registration or insurance card

> Driver should not debate the issuance of a citation on the highway; any disputes will be settled in court

Can I see my vehicles speed on the Deputies Radar Unit?

No, there are safety concerns that do not allow you to go back to the Deputies unit to view the equipment. The deputy must testify in court their ability to operate the equipment and it's accuracy at the time of the stop. The Deputy has the burden to prove your guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
